The Artwork

Idea: For Murgia, the focus is on what is elementary. Lines, dots and symbols in black and white contrasts serve to open up new imageries.

Theme: Murgia is particularly passionate about sound and light. He seeks inspiration from both and transfers it onto paper by filling the void whilst following the rhythm.

Aesthetics: The aesthetic appeal in Murgia’s work is mainly based on an interplay between abundance and emptiness: from a distance, the dots melt into a cloud-like shape, from up close, one can appreciate the accurate and thoughtful placing of each individual application of color.

Technique: Murgia is able to demonstrate his perfected skills by using various techniques, including photography and installation. For his “dots” and “lines” he has relied on a classic medium: the drawing – however, interpreted in a modern way.

The Artist

born in1989 in Sardinia, Italy

Minimalism and reduction… one of the first things the viewer notices when looking at the works of Federico Murgia. Owing to the tradition of conceptual, abstract artists, such as Sol LeWitt, who became popular in the 1950s and 1960s, the native Sardinian (born 1989) places great importance on what is essential: lines, symbols, markings, the contrast of black and white. He manages to create rhythmical images without the use of striking colour combinations or motives. Here, he uses classic techniques, such as photography, graphic reproduction or drawing, and furthermore creates sculptures or technically complex light and sound installations.  More
