The Artwork

Jorge R. Pombo has traveled to many countries to explore the cultural differences and find subjects for his works. His impressions as well the photographs of cities like New York, Rome, Dublin, Venice and Istanbul impact the artworks that introduce the viewer in Pombo`s innovative creativity and world of interpretation.

Painting is just another language, like Chinese, English or Inuit, so strange at first, but essential for relations. You can master painting techniques in the same way as you learn the grammar and vocabulary of a foreign language, but you can just say anything, if you have something to tell or to share. If it is not the case, then these are empty words, useless brushstrokes.

Jorge R. Pombo

The Artist

born 1973 in Barcelona, Spain

Paintings are his only language, without any discourse, Jorge R. Pombo comments on his work. The Spanish painter, born in 1973 in Barcelona, is a world traveler. He was strongly influenced by his journeys worldwide: the places he visited, as well as the artists whose works he was acquainted with. Great masters such as Jacopo Tintoretto, Caravaggio or Guido Reni inspired him to create his own interpretations. Tintoretto's Renaissance painting "Miracle of Saint Mark" became through Pombo an abstract art in a large format. He dissolved the forms and developed color streaks and layers on his canvases, that hardly remind his source of inspiration. Thus a new work emerges, free from any scheme - and in spite of that a mixture of both or a "struggle of opposites".

Controversies, differences and similarities can be found in Pombo's city views`s paintings. He used his own impressions as well as photographs of metropolises like Madrid, Paris or New York, where he lived for a long time, and oposed them to places like Sarajevo, Mumbai or Doha. Several views are layered on each other almost as film sequences. The realistic image, the painter created at first, is translated into abstract art. The objective place became subjective, which can be else where around the world. At some moment, he appears to be familiar to the viewer, and next he becomes strange.
